Job Description Summary

The Executive Director (ED) of Business Operations for MUSC Hollings Cancer Center ensures that all research administrative business activities (non-clinical), including financial, human resources, IT, communications, marketing, and public relations operations run smoothly for the Cancer Center. This administrative leader will provide direction to ensure the timely completion of all strategic research initiatives and serve as the gatekeeper and monitor the flow of multi-platform communications to and from Cancer Center leadership.
The ED will ensure that the Cancer Center leadership constantly remains in touch with Center stakeholders, including members, staff, trainees, community advisors, and MUSC Enterprise leadership. The ED will provide the financial stewardship necessary to manage HCC’s financial resources, providing financial forecasting and expenditure reporting to ensure Cancer Center leadership have the financial information necessary to make sound investments based on the recommendations they receive from internal and external advisory committees. The ED will manage public relations events on behalf of HCC for VIP visits and oversee VIP patient navigation services. The ED will also provide direction and consultation to the HCC Development Unit to ensure fundraising priorities are aligned with the Center’s strategic priorities and administrative oversight to the HCC Clinical Trials Office (CTO). This position reports to the Center Director and Associate Director of Research Administration and will be a member of the senor leadership team.

Responsibilities include:

35% Directs the Hollings Cancer Center Business Operations and Communications/Marketing

  • Oversight of financial reporting, budgets, and budget forecasting
  • Responsible for business processes including accounting, procurement, and human resources.
  • Oversight of communications strategic plan for Hollings and communications plan to MUSC Enterprise communications and marketing leaders.
  • Oversight of website including content, tracking metrics to optimize marketing efforts.
  • Oversight of social media, print, and digital marketing
  • Management of Hollings IT personnel and services

35% Directs Community Relations for Hollings Cancer Center

  • Oversees community relations strategic planning and events on behalf of the Cancer Center Director for VIP visits, government relations and development of community partnerships.
  • Manages VIP patient navigation services.
  • Directs development of presentations for the Cancer Center Director, as well as presents on the Director’s behalf as needed.

30% Executive Management of Hollings Cancer Center

  • Provides Cancer Center senior leaders with recommendations and consultation to improve teamwork across the Cancer Center.
  • Manages strategic timelines for the Cancer Center Director, Executive Council, and administrative directors by determining and prioritizing strategies based on their schedules and current project needs; ensures projects and initiatives are appropriately prioritized, funded, and completed on time.
  • Provides direction and consultation to Hollings Cancer Center development to ensure fundraising priorities are aligned with Center’s strategic priorities.
  • Provides administrative direction for Hollings Cancer Center’s clinical trials operations.

Requirements and Skills

  • Extensive experience with budget and business operations management, including accounting, budget forecasting, procurement, IT, and human resources.
  • Extensive experience with communications and marketing operations, including website, social media, print, digital and print marketing, and public relations.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills with exceptional attention to detail, fact-checking.
  • Proven success in a project coordination role and superior time management skills
  • Nimble business mind with a focus on developing creative solutions.
  • Strong project reporting skills, with a focus on interdepartmental communications.
  • Experience with building and maintaining relationships within the community, including government relations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred; degrees in life sciences, communications, business administration, and public administration preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience with progressive management responsibilities, preferably in a cancer center or academic institution
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, and experience working effectively in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Professional business acumen; diplomatic.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree and five years relevant program management experience.
